Fall Steelhead Starting Up

Hi All

Sorry for the big laps in reports...We never had a super huge push of fish, no big rain, or no major change in the weather to trigger the Salmon Run...So it was a trickle, trickle, trickle run and it's still trickling and will thru November into December is my guess...Fall Steelhead are starting to show up in the same trickle effect and will continue all Fall and thru the Winter as usual. Had a guide trip yesterday and we had a good day with a mixed bag pitching lures..John and Kevin caught Pike, Steelhead, Coho and a Lake Trout..The Laker is my first in the River. Even had a few Kings follow up to the boat...

Other than the usual guiding in the Fall I have been bird hunting with some friends Jeff and Heather over their new German Shorthair, June for Grouse and Woodcock. I also went out with Greg Dygert a customer and his Black Lab, Holly to Gleasons Farm in Custer to shoot Pheasants..I got a grouse and woodcock over the new pup June and 4 Pheasants at the farm over Holly...We all had fun shooting up the woods..I always measure a bird hunt not by how many you get but by how much your gun goes off. As long as your burning shells your having fun with your shotgun...Why shoot once when you can shoot twice, with your second shot being more accurate than your first..Unless you hit with your first shot, then your conserving ammo...

I have been working in my basement all Fall on and off between trips and such...Re-located the bathroom and going to finish off the old bunkhouse for my son Adam to live while he goes to college. So that's been a ton of projects and will keep going on it thru December..I'm guessing it will be done by New Years if not sooner..

Leaving for my annual Bow hunting trip next week to MO. and will be back November around the 12th. and have a few trips on the books right after I get home..So if your interested in chasing Steelhead I'm open Nov. 15th on thru December 15 th.. which to me is the best time to Steelhead if you ask me...

Here is a bunch of pictures from the Fall Salmon run...Good luck with the Fall Steelhead Run we still need a bunch of rain to fire that up better...

Wish me luck Bow hunting and I'll see you in November sometime, hopefully with a big buck on the ground and Steelhead rod in hand and one in the net...

Fall Is Starting

Hi All

Fall is off to a slow start...Leaves are starting to change color acorns and apples are starting to ripen and fall (watch your head)...It is still warmer than I would like and much less rain fall than I would like to have had by now..So I haven't been blowing the old Salmon are here horn, even know they are around...There are a few Kings, Steelhead and LR Browns trickling in and were off to another late start like last season and many other seasons when we get Indian Summers...Nothing we haven't seen before...The good news are there are a few to be had every day you hit the water and give it a shot.. Also it is getting better every day...We have either been getting BIT by Kings, Steelhead, Browns or Pike every trip out and been having a great time on the water..Is it "game on" NO not really but it's still fun and beats sitting at home reading reports or working...

My wife Debi and I started scouting for Kings when we got a big cool down and rain August 22-- 24th. she had some good battles and lost a couple that made her lower lip stick out..Haha ...I've been doing all kinds of trips searching for the big ball only to find scattered pushes...Mid- River we hooked some Kings, Steelhead and Browns...Lower River fishing stick baits hitting Kings, Pike, Steelhead and LR Browns...Upper river is Trout season hoppers, nymphs, and mousing is still working...Big lake fishing out of Ludington has been good as well...Going tonight in a few hours...Big Boat is running well and it's a fish catching machine, lots of fun...

I have had some cancellations and some good dates open up...September 24,30...Give us a call and book a trip...October 1,5,6,7,9,10--16th. 18--22nd are also great open dates..

Still Summer

Hi All

Summer is still here but will be winding down soon. Jeff and I have went Pike fishing last week..Had a 1/2 day Trout trip this past Sunday with Joe.. John Robinson and I have been doing a bunch of big laken out on Lake Michigan. John's lady's team won 4 th. place on Friday July 17th $300 prize money with me on Hookzalot..Glad we were in my 25' boat with radar. We were fogged in all day and big waves..The Lady's team did great, despite very bad conditions..Ludington Offshore Classic was cancelled Saturday due to severe thunder storms July 18th.( another day we were all very glad to be in a big boat) and it turned into a 1 day shootout..Team Hookzalot came in 26th. about the middle of the pack on Sunday....Other than fun fishing with family and friends and the normal busy summer tourist season stuff, all is good..

I will be calling people soon to finalize there Salmon season plans and there is a couple Kings swimming around the river already..No fishable #'s of course but you might see a few here or there if your looking in the bottom of a big deep dark hole...We are catching Kings more consistently out in Lake Michigan the last few trips out as they move in closer to shore...

Summers Here

Hi All

Been busy and staying out of trouble...What's the latest....The Hex Hatch is going for a little while longer( week or two more)..It started going from my reports around June18th was decent...Me I started around the 21st.. I waited for the water to drop and clear, then some heat to build up to get the hatch rolling...Some great reports of some big fish being caught with the lights out...It's easier to trick them into eating when they can't see every little thing..Casting and mending fly line in the dark still has to be done well but not to perfection like daytime dry flies..

Daytime fishing has been picking up...As the water gets low and clear the fish are getting hungry and feeding during daylight hours too..Nymphing and terrestrials are getting it done...The high dirty water of the last few weeks has had challenging days with full belly fish...Glad to see it getting to a more normal flow...

When the rivers were high, dirty and tough fishing a couple weeks ago Jeff Hubbard and I tried some local lakes for Gills and Bass one afternoon. That was a nice change of pace lakes were full and clear... perfect condition.... It's Fun watching those fish gang up on your popper...All of them taking turns at tearing the rubber legs off the poppers..

Just got back from Saginaw Bay Walleye fishing with some friends( John, Brad, and Chuck) June 24,25th.....It was a good trip with 13 the first day and 10 the second day...Only one throw back all the rest were keepers and our biggest Walleye was 26.5"..So we have some fish in the freezer for some fish fries...

My 25' Baha Cruiser has been in the water at the docks for a littler over a month...Been out a bunch of times catching Kings, Lakers and Steelhead.. Probably going out tomorrow we have a good wave report for Ludington for the next few days..

My Son Adam graduated High School May 29th. 3 rd. in his class. He has also enrolled at Ferris State. His Major is Criminal Justice and we hope he does well and likes college. Ferris has a CJ program, A-Z all right there...From what I hear it's a great school..

River trips trickle in all summer..I'm booked June 28,29 and July 2, this week.. Lots of options fishing wise, Hex Hatch, daytime dries and nymphing, or mousing at night...Warm water wise, we have Gills and Bass on local lakes with poppers and rivers with Smallies and Pike top water and streamers.. If your looking to get out and do some fishing give us a call...231-745-6667 and book a trip we have lots of good openings...

ATV riders are having a blast on the trials. The Ox Market Flea Roast in Irons, Mi. is this weekend..Me and Debi went there for a few hours today to check out ONE of Lake County's many festivals that go on thru the summer months...Next is 4th. of July weekend.. After that is the Idlewild Jazz Festival July 10,11th..Then Trout-A-Rama July 15--19th..Ludington Offshore Classic is July 16-19th.. My boat HOOKZA LOT will be in that tournament...It's a lot of fun even if you don't win the big money..

Life Is Short....Fish as much as you can...
